Jeff! – You’re doing it wrong.

Doing what what?

Yes – well that’s what I’d like to know.. One of those times where everything you do is just wrong wrong wrong. Infact I’d be more inclined to say – Hey Jeff, did you know that today, you did something right?. I’d love that. Even if it was just one itty bitty thing!.

What am I going on about?? Well, I’ll leave that up to you to decide but let’s just say life can be bloody hard work sometimes!.

So how is everyone, hope your all good and well. Almost the middle of the year! can’t believe 2012 is already almost half over. I still remember January 1 like it was yesterday.

Who would have thought!

Changes in life are something that we’re supposed to get used to everyday right?

What about those when those changes are unexpected?. I’m not saying in a bad way either. What if changes that you didn’t see coming changed your life for the good?.

The last 12 months have taught me to not settle for second best, believe that things probably won’t change unless you make the change, don’t forget that there is someone always worse off than you and remember to aim high.

How does all this apply to me??.
In one fowl swoop I’ve changed my life in that I have a great job paying a great wage, I’m met someone who’s just turned my life upside down (for the better!) and I’m coping well with the daily challenges that this life has started to through me.

So what about the other side.. The bad side, what about those stories I hear you ask?. Well to be honest, why dwell on those?? If positive things are what’s happening in your life, grab that will all that you have and discard the negative.. How can you be angry/sad/upset if you don’t actually remember why your’re upset in the first place?.

I never knew that meeting someone could change the way I operate. By this I don’t mean they’re changing me, they’re not. What they have done however is have a massive impact on my confidence, my ability to enjoy life and my ability to love.

It’s so wonderful that I can feel so comfortable with someone that wants what I want. Feels how I feel and makes me feel so complete.

So where am I going with all this?.
Don’t settle for second best. Ever. You don’t deserve it. Only settle when you and your partner both know that what you have is unbreakable and something that you’ve never felt before.

So, to all those people out there who don’t believe in the power of thought and even the power of love for that matter.. Maybe you need to look in the mirror?? What do you see.. What do you want to see??.

I’ve learn’t (the hard way), that the only person who can actually make the biggest impact on your life is you. The second is the one you hold closest and most dearest to your heart.

Hope you had a great easter. I’m an atheist but I thank the people who made catholic public holidays a part of Australian culture!.

Going back in time.. Android to iPhone

So back in 2010 I had a iphone 3gs. Good phone and for reasons not explained here I spat the dummy with my phone company, changed to Optus and got a Samsung Galaxy S1 in the process.

Great, new phone new experiences etc etc. Life was good.
August 2011 I moved to a Galaxy SII and that was ok as well.
By this point though things were starting to bother me.

1. Accessories, everything is apple apple apple. Belkin have a huge range of apple accessories but not many actually make non-apple accessories.

2. The other thing is Google’s policy/non-vetting of applications. Malware etc.
Apple vet there apps so you get mainly a good solid product. Lots of improvements there for Google to do.

3. All in one. Still, iphone you cannot beat it for music. I can do EVERYTHING from the iphone with my music, sync it easily to my desktop and even dock the iphone to my stereo with a cheap attachment. Again with accessories for a lot of stereo’s now they include ipod/iphone docks.

So what’s the conclusion here?. I think it’s pretty safe to say that I’m expecting big things from the iphone 5. I’m expecting it to be lighter, thinner, faster and have the awesome OS that is OS5.

Another thing that bugs me, people go on and on about customisable features of phones like Android where you can do all sorts with the desktops etc, hack it and get more stuff etc etc.. Point is, 90% of users don’t NEED that stuff. They don’t NEED to hack the phone. Most users use it as is. Most users don’t even use 70% of the apps they download on their device.

In this instance, I’m also back to the iphone. Simple setup, lasts longer without a reboot required and it sandboxes its applications.

So again.. I’m really looking forward to the iphone 5. so much so that you may find me a day before release in the queue at the apple shop.. Depending on work of course!.
I feel like Google has lost market share lately, and soon it is also going to lose me..

Q: What’s the major factor on accessories?
A: A single device utilising the operating system making it easy to construct accessories.

Q: Why are iphone apps better than android?
A: They’re vetted and they go through a process. Google apps are made by developers and “launched” as is.

Western Australia – A country?

“In 1933, Western Australia voted in a referendum to leave the Australian Federation, with a majority of two to one in favour of secession.[29] However, an election held shortly before the referendum had turned out the incumbent “pro-independence” government, replacing it with a government which did not support the independence movement. Respecting the result of the referendum, the new government nonetheless petitioned the Agent General of the United Kingdom for independence, where the request was simply ignored.[30]”

Call me obvious but I’m pretty sure that’s not a yes or a no, in fact I’m pretty sure the population had spoken and that by our own right the country of Western Australia should exist?.

What do you think?

Money Matters

Right? well, that’s what we’re faced with every day aren’t we? Go to work, come home. Lately I’ve been in the office from 6:45am till 6pm. Almost seems pointless in going home really doesn’t it? an hour drive each way, so I get about 9 hours at home if take out the actual getting up and getting ready part.

We do this to put food on our tables, cars in our garages and for those hobbies which in most cases cost a lot of money!
(Photography, sky diving, scuba diving, kite surfing). So I find my self at the start of this year in an interesting position that I’ve not been in since I was… well.. Actually the last time I was in this position I was about 15.

I’ve got left over money after the pay fortnight. Not just $20-50 dollars either. We’re talking that I have actually built up a “rainy day fund” in a matter of weeks. I love it, I think it’s great I can finally do this.. On the other hand I’m in a predicament about the fact that I have $1500 to fork out for air-conditioning (compressor in my car’s gone :( ).

So what would you do? Dip massively into your rainy day fund for your air-con in your car to be fixed, or wait it out a bit longer until you have not only your rainy day fund covered but also your air-con repair?.

After all, how much is a rainy day fund supposed to be? 10% of your income?, 3 months worth of expenditure?, a years’ wage even? I’m curious to know where you sit on this and would love to hear comments about it!.

On another note, life is good. I’ve moved house and clocking up move 28 is pretty scary to be honest with you. Kinda over it but realise another move is most likely on the cards in the future..

MYOB

It’s sometimes a hard thing to get your head around, learning to keep out of other peoples business..
It’s actually quite simple, worry about your own life and don’t get involved in someone else’s but apparently that’s quite difficult for some people to understand.

This life I lead now is quite different to how it was 2 years ago, and because of that I make decisions around how I operate now.. Not in the best interests of everyone else but in the best interests and humour of myself. I will do what I want to do not what everyone else wants me to do, I will see who I want to see and when I want to see them.

People don’t get to control me, only 2 people can and they know who they are, one is very special the other is just higher on ladder than I.

If you don’t understand me, don’t try to, you won’t be able to and you should just move on and leave it alone.

Mind your own business – My business is not for your eyes.

Bali Travel Tips

I found an interesting fact sheet on do’s and do not’s of Bali travel today and thought I’d share them with you.

Bali Travel Do’s & Don’ts
? Do…

  • Check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from date of entry into Indonesia before travelling.
  • Purchase travel insurance or ensure that your current policy will help cover your medical expenses, if required.
  • Only change money at reputable money changers; use your own (or the hotel’s) calculator before changing; recount after exchange. Dodgy changers generally have better exchange rates, give you smaller notes and won’t let you recount.
  • Familiarize yourself with the currencies . The Rp100,000 (approx US$10) has 2 men and the RP10,000 (approx US$1) has only 1 man on the note. A Rp60,000 massage could cost you Rp600,000 if you are not careful!
  • Slap on loads of High Factor Waterproof Sun Cream; even during cloudy days , the UV rays can be intense!
  • Drink plenty of bottled mineral water and eat a lot of fresh fruit.
  • Avoid eating at local side street stalls if you are not sure, as the infamous Bali belly is not pleasant (Imodium helps)
  • Be careful with your belongings at all times. Crime is ever-present.
  • Walk around offerings on the street, if you accidentally step on one, just apologize and move on.
  • Respect the slow pace of processions when stuck behind one, i.e. don’t honk!
  • Bargain when buying (except on price-tagged goods in boutiques).
  • Wear a helmet when riding motorbikes and also watch out for dashing dogs!
  • Be a responsible tourist and recycle where possible. Bring home amazing souvenirs from your holiday and leave behind a cleaner Bali!

× Don’t …

  • Forget to take a photocopy of your passport or ID with you at all times.
  • Forget to carry a valid international car or motorbike license for hiring self-drive car or riding motorbikes.
  • Swim outside designated swimming areas on the beach, currents can be very strong and most beaches do not have lifeguards. Swim between the red and yellow flags.
  • Do drugs! It can carry the death penalty, and there are enough foreigners residing in Bali courtesy of the Government prison service!
  • Touch people’s heads – it is very offensive to Hindus.
  • Enter a temple during menstruation. Sorry ladies!
  • Forget to put salt in your food & drink lots of water – this helps prevent dehydration.
  • Worry too much about the ice – it’s government-quality controlled in established bars and restaurants.
  • Forget to look and listen while you cross the road. Cars may stop, motorbikes may not!
  • Forget to reconfirm your flight 72 hours prior to flying. Airport Departure Tax is: International = Rp150,000 / Domestic = Rp30,000

Now after those do’s and do not’s there are some “watch and act” warnings that I feel are applicable when travelling to Bali that will help you..

Watch for:

  • Little children selling wrist bracelets – they’ll surround you and whilst one is hustling you the either is taking money from your pockets!.
  • Dogs – Don’t pat them – rabies is high risk here.
  • Dodgey stalls. A lot of non-bali residents come to Bali, set up a stall and rip you off and if they don’t succeed there they’ll try pinching your money straight from your wallet.
  • Cheeky taxi drivers – You ONLY want to use REAL blue bird taxis. How do you know they’re real??
    They look like this:

So what do you notice about this taxi??

1. It has the blue bird group sticker on the windscreen.
2. It has the “nice” looking bluebird logo.

When you get into the taxi, you request the meter to run and do not accept “meter not working” get out and get another taxi.

  • From the airport to Kuta you’ll pay about 60,000RP for a bluebird taxi.
  • Do NOT accept assistance from anyone that wants to help with your baggage other than the blue bird taxi driver himself. It’s also polite to tip him after your’re dropped off at your hotel. After all, you just paid $8 for a taxi and you can’t get that sort of fee anywhere in Australia for a taxi and a 10km journey as far as I know.

More to come soon!

Facebook backup – It can be done!

Ever wondered how to go all your photos from facebook that you’ve being uploading over the last few years
Myself, I upload them to Facebook then end up deleting them on the computer or phone.. So I often think..

How am I going to get those photos back from facebook onto my computer?

Well! I found a little secret in the account settings called:
Download a copy of your facebook data.
When you do this, you get a downloadable zip file containing:

  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Wall Posts
  • Messages & Chat Conversations
  • Friends names and e-mail addresses (if turned on in their security settings).

So how do you get it?

Click Account > Account Settings:

Then at the bottom of the centered template is the Download a copy of my facebook data link.

Follow the prompts and then a bit later, you’ll receive an e-mail with the link to your archive.
Download, unzip and view. Or backup, which ever case.

REMEMBER: this archive contains all your personal information that you’ve got listed on facebook
so be very careful who you give it too and where you back it up to.

IT Software Asset Management – Get into it!

Countless times I’ve been engaged to have a look at an organisations software asset management and almost 100% of the time it’s the same thing. Excel Spreadsheets. Now I know as well as you do that if you’re larger than 100 employees you should not be keeping track of your software licenses in an excel spreadsheet. Worst of all, you shouldn’t be doing if you’re the size of an organisation that has over 50,000 machines.

There are so many options for you to better manage your software entitlements and “being to hard” is not a good enough excuse any more.

Plenty of Software Asset Management packages out there to better manage your software and it’s licensing. Don’t be lazy, get someone in who understand ITSAM and help them to move your company into a better licensing position.

If you want to know more, get in touch and I’ll be happy to echo my opinions on certain software and experiences with it.
