Australia and the NBN – What’s best?

I think the Australian public is very confused and uneducated when it comes to the NBN, perhaps there needs to be an add campaign to describe the benefits of the Labor solution compared to the Coalition solution.

It’s actually quite simple.
Labor’s solution – the current one being rolled out – albeit very slowly.

Great solution, yes it’ll take time but it future proof’s our physical broadband infrastructure for years to come.
Why?? Fibre to the home (FTTH) is a physical fibre cable from the exchange or interconnect point to your home. It’s like having a 6 lane highway straight to your house. No traffic congestion – almost EVER.
The reason this is good is because it means that hopefully no matter what technology throws at us in the way of application size or ULTRA HD definition media, fibre will be able to deliver that media and do it well.
Fibre is also better than copper because it does not get interference like copper does. No more calling your telco because your line is noisy, no more worrying about how far you are from the exchange due to the limitations of ADSL.

Coalition’s solution – FTTN – Fibre to the node.
The Coalition solution, whilst still very achievable and doable does in fact dent the progress of the technology it self.
The difference is that your existing copper phone line from your house to the pitt in the street will still be that – copper. Then it’s fibre in the street back to the node/exchange or interconnect point. Whilst it’s still ok, you might still have issues with things like back to base alarms etc. It also means you might be speed limited in the future due to copper being restrictive at this point in time. Yes – the future could be brighter given more development, but why do that when we have fibre.

Price wise, who cares. Even if the dam thing cost 100 billion over the next 10 years, we’re talking about future proofing our digital economy for at least the next 50 years.

Let me put it to you this way. How much did Parliament house cost to build? How was it paid for?? Ahh – yes, that’s right, the tax payer copped an extra tax for a while to pay for it.. But wait, Parliament house was a MUST have, it HAD to be done. – No it didn’t. This on the other hand?? This will put Australia at the front of the digital age and we’ll be the best example of wideband fibre deployed over vast distances on a massive scale. This will get Australia noticed.

More to it… Right?

It’s Tuesday, 12th of February 2013.
I wake up, looking at the roof, hearing work trucks around the house in the new estate I live in.
I’m currently not working, recently lost my best friend (not dead, just disagreement).
It’s been 1 month since I had fulltime work. I’m so very lost now that I feel like both arms have been cut off.
I’m apply for an average of ten suited jobs a day. I’m often given no feedback on anything and feel as though people just don’t care.

I am awake this morning looking at the roof thinking, “God, there must be more to life than this. I need to breathe, I need to experience life.”
Of course there is more to life Jeff..

Only you can make it happen though, worst part it, it all costs money.
Money for plane trips, money for accommodation, money for food, money for the adventures that you seek.
All up I need about $20,000.

I want to give back, I want to travel to third world countries, help them with water supplies, help them with constructing homes, help them with schooling. I want to skydive, I want to climb mountains and take photographic memories.
Life is way to short to sit around here, moping about unemployment. It’s only been a month and I feel like homer simpson doing the whoop whoop dance on the floor in circles.

Allow me to find a way out of here.. To be free.

Phuket 2012 – The events that changed my life.

Well, you might be wondering what’s taken me so long to post this.

To be honest, I got “camera shy”. The events of the last month have been huge.

I can honestly say that in the 15 days I was in Phuket I had an absolute wonderful time both medically and physically.

The trip had it’s sensitive moments but overall it was fantastic.

So, what happened?

Well, my Perth – Kuala Lumpur flight was good, new A330 and I booked a premium economy seat, felt more like business class really..

I never wanted to travel economy again but had to on the way home.

Arrival:

Arriving into Phuket was pretty straight forward, unlike Bali there are no entry and exist fees so this makes the process a little easier, I also felt “safer” in Phuket, perhaps that’s just because there hasn’t really been too much hatred towards Westerners there. The trip from the airport to Patong beach feels like it goes forever. Kinda normal though really isn’t it? When you first go someone and it’s a long way away, it takes FOREVER to get there. All in all it’s about 45 mins to 1 hour depending on your driver.

Hotel:

Not as nice as I’d hoped, clearly someone had been smoking in my room the “cushion” pillows on the bed smelt horrible. As I am only paying under $50 a night, I didn’t complain.. The bonus of this hotel was that it is smack bang behind my dental clinic.

The bed was a king but I might have been better sleeping on the floor, rock hard I very much appreciated my bed back in Perth on my return!.

Breakfast was ok, not as great as our Bali breakfast staying at Kuta Seaview but then we were paying 4-5 times the amount.

First Impressions:

Patong beach, like bali a few years ago often has that “sewer” smell to it. Patong floods quite easily and wish that brings  ”yukkys” to the surface.

Other than this, Patong beach and Phuket in general is very scenic, I enjoyed hiring a scooter and motoring around seeing different places, often getting lost but finding my way back. The people seemed friendly enough but one thing I noticed is that I got harassed more in Patong than I did in Kuta. This was very evident with “massages”.

95% of Thai massages “want” to end with a happy ending, they almost get upset when you say no and you almost feel like your dishonouring them. Never the less I kept my whits about me and said a firm no. Obviously if you have your partner with you, no one seems to harass you.

Dental Appointment No1.

This was a quick overview of what we were going to get into, basically it described the fact that I required 2 maybe 3 root canals and then 15-18 crowns.

The final mark was set at 2 root canals and 15 crowns.

The next week I spent time in and out of the dentist, getting my root canals done (2 appointments) and then getting my teeth prepared for the crowns (another 2 appointments). During this time I often simply stayed in the Hotel laying around watching Fox8 all about the US presidential election, or BBC News, much about the same thing.

I did however venture out and go to “The Flying Hunuman” basic description from http://flyinghanuman.com/

“Flying Hanuman is an adventure like no other on Phuket. It shows that the island’s beauty goes far beyond the sea, sun and sand that it is famous for. The hillsides of Phuket overflow with thick forest that is great for exploration and outdoor activities. What Flying Hanuman aimed to achieve was to provide travellers with exceptional service, enjoyment, excitement and memories without impacting the natural balance within the forest environment surrounding it.

There is no better way to take in the other face of the Pearl of the Andaman.”

I really enjoyed this experience and hoped when my partner came across we would go as well. (which we did).

I also had some really good nights out and met some random people. US Sailors, other aussies and made some good friends from Melbourne.

On the 2nd week my parter came across and that was great to have someone close there to spend some time with. We hired a 250cc scooter and motored all over lower phuket It was great fun, but sometimes very wet!!.

On the Wednesday, the big day, the new teeth went in…

They look great and much better than my previous look which I won’t show.

Once in it took a couple of days to get used to them and I had to go back on the Monday before the flight back on Tuesday to have a couple of them filed down as my bite wasn’t sitting correctly.

——————–

It’s now 2 months on and I love my new chompers, they’ve given me no trouble and I feel much more confident about laughing in public and even talking.

I cannot say how happy I truely am with the service at Sea Smile in Patong Beach Phuket, they’re professional and take it all very seriously. It’s a very well oiled machine and I would strongly recommened anyone wanting the work done to use these guys. www.thaidentalcenter.com

That’s all folks!

Oct 02

The countdown is on

Well, it’s the 2nd of October and I have just 7 days before my first dental appointment in Phuket.

What am I doing you ask?
Well, the time has come for me to spend a little bit of my hard earned money on something worth while and that’s my future. Most of my friends and family know that my “smile” is not exactly nice, previous dental mishaps and 2 accidents have meant that my front teeth are not in great shape. I will be making a video diary of the journey and will post updates as I go.

So what’s being done? To my calculations I’m looking at between 16-18 porcelain crowns being put into my mouth to try and make something of this face. I have not actually smiled properly without being self concious in over 21 years. I in fact don’t remember the last time I smiled without being worried about what people will see.

So why Phuket?.
Simple – Cost.
In Perth Australia, I was quoted $23,000 for the work to be done.
In Phuket – Under $11,000. This in fact could be even lower, I’ve budgeted for the worst case scenario.

So 6 more days and I’ll be on the place to Phuket, I’ll keep you updated with my feelings.
At the moment, I’m nervous, excited and scared all at the same time, quite an odd feeling.. Feeling quite amused.

Following Directions

Can You Follow Directions?
1. Read this entire list carefully before doing anything else.

2. Get out a blank sheet of paper.

3. Put your name in the upper right-hand corner.

4. Write the word “name” and circle it.

5. Draw five small squares in the upper left-hand corner.

6. Put an “X” in each square.

7. Sign your name under the title of this paper.

8. Write sentence number seven above and put a circle completely around it.

9. Put an “X” in the lower left-hand corner of the page.

10. Draw a triangle around the word “corner”.

11. On the back of the paper, add 75 and 13.

12. Loudly call out your first name (for motivation) when you get this far.

13. If you think you have carefully followed directions to this point call out, “I have” (for self-affirmation).

14. On the reverse side of the paper, subtract 12 from 69.

15. Count backwards to yourself from 10 to 1.

16. Say “I am a leader in following directions”.

17. Write all of the even numbers in this list on the page.

18. Say “I am nearly finished and I have followed directions.”

19. Now that you have finished reading the entire page do only sentence number two. If you have already completed any of the other tasks in the list, you failed to follow directions and failed the test. Remember following directions involves reading each item carefully starting with the first sentence (it stated “read the entire list before doing anything else.”)

The New Holden Volt

So, Holden are releasing a car that they say is unlike any other car.
It’s so awesome, that you can charge it at home.

HOW AWESOME – I CAN CHARGE MY CAR AT HOME!, it’s like a mobile phone.. Only.. it will take 6 hours to charge.

So, for this 6 hours of charge, just what will I get out of it.
..

….
…..
……
80km

Sorry, say what? 80km.
Yes Jeff, that’s right, the H.V will get you 80km before your backup petrol engine kicks in and uses petrol till you recharge..

*blank look, cough*. Umm.. 80km?
What’s wrong with 80km?? Well, a lot actually.
This is Australia, not the Isle of man. 80km.. I’m pretty sure the average person drives that almost everyday (mums and dads etc).

So Holden want you to buy this car.. Why would you?.
Well, to be honest, there is no reason. I cannot see one positive in this car
other than the fact it’s going to help green house gases. Yeah that’s great, but we’re in 2012, if it doesn’t help you right this very moment, you’re almost already not interested.

So, where did they go wrong? 80km, that’s where.
What’s it need to be? 200-250km. If you can reach that mark, you’ll have buyers.
There are a number of reasons for this, but the main one being – I don’t want to have to plug this thing in every single night.

Holden will say it’ll cost you as little as $2.50 for a recharge.. As little as? Where’s the data to show this. I’m going to base it on a $5 cost.
$5 for 80km of fuel.. Let me work out my car here. I own a statesman. Yep it’s a V8, but you might as well compare with the worst to get the best right?
It costs me about 20c per km.
The Holden volt based on $5 per 80km? About 6c. so 500km over a week that’s about $31.25 in power generation at $5 per 80km.
If we truely believe the Holden view of $2.5 then it’s only $15.62.
Ok Jeff, that’s great, but again, it’s only doing 80km.
Well the average joe probably travels between 25-75km per day, so it might just work for you. What does this mean? It should help your hip pocket. SHOULD. What do you need to remember? Like many smartphones today, you need to plug it in everytime you get home. The down side to this? If you’re out and about, you’ll be struggling.
End note – You’ll still need a petrol pump by owning this car.
It’s a step in the right direction, I just wish it was a slightly bigger step.

Qantas’s recent annoucement

Today (23/8/12) Qantas Airways announced a +$200,000,000 loss for 2011/2012 FY.
To some, this may come as a shock, however for me I could see this coming 12 months ago and more recently I suspected it would be a lot worse than first thought.

So why is this happening?
One word – Competition.
Virgin have continued to increase their “air share” around Australia and if my last few experiences are anything to go by, they’ll continue to do that.

Qantas. I have some advice. This advice comes from someone who uses your airline around 5 times a year on domestic routes and 0 times a year on international routes due to pricing.
Concern 1: Perth – Syd, Perth – Melb.
Upgrade you fleet, the 767′s remind me of flying 30 years ago.. Not 2012. Take a look at Virgin’s A330′ wide bodied aircraft. The lighting is more “soothing”, the interior is modern and relaxing and even the seats feel better.
You must keep with the times on your fleet. Given that Virgin have now allocated their A330′s for the per-syd and per-melb routes, you’re in for some competition.

Concern 2: Business class.
Especially on the 767 aircraft, these are not worth the extra $1000+ people pay. The 767 I recently upgraded to business on had nothing more than a seat that went back a bit more, I didn’t even have an entertainment unit. The A330′s (even with Qantas) are far nicer.
Perhaps instead of investing billions into 787′s that you’ve now cancelled, re-invent the interior’s of the 767, perhaps even on one or two aircraft make the seating bigger, call them all “premium economy” and charge an extra $200 a seat. You’ll find we’re pretty accommodating to extra room if we think the price is right.

Concern 3: The brand.
The best thing you’ve done recently for your brand was use Australian Olympians in your safety ads, I think it was a fantastic thing to do and I even actually watch it just to see who I can spot. Perhaps you should use these people more in advertising. Remember “He’s on the qantas ad” is effectively advertising :) .

Concern 4: – Internationals.
The airline as we know it is under massive threat from internationals talking about expanding into australia’s domestic routes. If they do this, I can assure you, without either investment or buyout, Qantas will die. In saying that, I suspect the government would invest in Qantas given the history, but as a commercial operation, if the internationals have their way, you will be swallowed up.

I suspect I’m not the only one with these concerns, but think perhaps you get some workshops together of regular customers and start working out ways to increase your bottom line for less so to speak. Do it quickly.

Now to my experiences.

Let it be known, I’ve flown Qantas around 20 times. of this I can say I’ve had issues with around 30% of my flying in some way.

The general things that frustrated me..
Entertainment system screens that don’t work, on a full aircraft this means I’m one very bored person.

Overhead lighting not working, even reading a book is out.

Baggage systems and ticketing systems going down (as recently as July). Technology is wonderful but when it stops working, chaos is the only way. 4 hours of waiting for my baggage in Sydney is not something I liked, nor was the 2 hour departure delay.

So after these things, and knowing that if I have a 767 boeing (sometimes I have no choice), do I still fly Qantas? Yes I do.. but their is one thing you have over Virgin, and that’s a 10 x better Frequent flyer system.

Perhaps this is where you’re losing money?

How about that! – One of those days.

Good afternoon all, well it has been one of those days today.

I was able to work from home to the gas man having to head over and fix a gas leak with our hot plate in the kitchen. The start of the day was pretty average, wake up, start work and get stuck into building more documentation for the company I’m currently contracted too.

Whiz bang! 8:15am and the gas man’s already here, nice work!.
Within 20 minutes the problem has been found and fixed, that was easy!.
The day continues on pretty painless, after 3pm I decide it’s time for that haircut.

Off to Salon Express in Midland I go. Easy and cheap, $16.50. Some places in Perth you’ll easy pay $30-45 for a “stylish” haircut. Mine is pretty simple, Clippers number 2 around the sides and take a bit out of the top to neaten it up. Not worth more than $20 if you ask me, takes less than 15 minutes to do. Post my haircut I head off to the “healthy food shop”. On my list, something to assist in the burning of Fat (ha ha ha) and this so cold Krill oil that everyone’s raving about.

This was my mistake, what I should have done was study online as to what a good fat burning supplement was but I generally buy first and study later.. So backwards right?.
So $100 (slightly less) later I have Krill oil and a product called “Hydroxycut Hardcore Pro Series”.
Sounds insane right? probably is but I’ll give it a go anyway..

So let’s see the reviews on this thing…

15 mins later..

Ok so the reviews are mixed, as expected really, some say it works, others say don’t waste your money. Sounds like its a thing were you have to see how you go.. So I will.

Besides that, I’m in a really good mood.. Don’t know why, just am. I like it!.

Almost Friday helps I think.

Take it easy yall!

Losing a good friend.

Sometimes in life, you meet an amazingly unique individual. This year I did just that. Met someone.. Almost like me. Fun to be around, great sense of humour and generally just an amazing person. I won’t mention names or sex’s but that person knows who they are. In fact – today they are leaving on a new journey and that’s sad because I won’t get to see them again, if ever.

Sometimes you find unique individuals you meet who inspire you, make you happy by them just being around and sometimes you meet people who you wish in different set of circumstances they’d make fantastic partners or great housemates. All I have to say is thank you for everything. You were there for me when I needed a chat and I hope I’ve also been there for you. Take care on your journey and stay safe, follow your heart but remain in a “real world”. Sometimes you just can’t change the way people operate.
